Gig Workers Bill Offers Equitable Roadmap, Aligns With International Labour Standards - NSI

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 25 (Bernama) -- The Gig Workers Bill 2025 which was tabled for the first reading at the Dewan Rakyat today, offers a balanced and forward-looking framework that benefits both workers and platform operators, North South Initiative (NSI) said today.

The labour rights organisation said that it believes the proposed bill sets out a roadmap that is equitable for all actors involved when compared to other labour related laws and practices.

“The proposed bill is inclusive of the four pillars of the International Labor Organisation’s Decent Work Agenda, - the right to work, rights at work, promotion of social dialogue and extending social protection.

“It provides the mechanisms to balance the protections of both workers and platform providers, equitable distribution of profits, social dialogue, and a fair and effective dispute resolution mechanism,” it said in a statement today, adding that it would result in lower operating costs for platform operators as the bill will ensure industrial harmony.

As the gig economy is dynamic in nature, the bill will empower social dialogue via the proposed consultative council which will continuously monitor arising issues and propose improvements and amendments to the bill.

The organisation also defended the bill’s development process, pointing out that the Human Resource Ministry (KESUMA) has been organising roadshows and consultations, and listened to thousands of gig workers and various platform operators since last year.

“As per NSI’s experience of policy making and advocacy over the past 15 years, we can affirm that there has never been a law tabled in Malaysia with such transparency and participatory engagement as per this Gig Workers Bill,” the organisation added.
