HAIKOU, Aug 25 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- Typhoon Kajiki, the 13th storm of the year, swept past the coast of south China's Hainan Province on Sunday night, affecting more than 100,000 people, officials said at a provincial press conference held on Monday, reported Xinhua.
The typhoon passed through the offshore areas from the resort city of Sanya to Ledong Li Autonomous County, and headed toward the central and northern coastal regions of Vietnam, according to the officials.
Preliminary figures show that about 102,500 people in Hainan are affected, and no casualties have been reported as of 9 am on Monday.
The typhoon inflicted damage to roads, water supply systems, power and communication facilities, as well as fallen trees and flooding in cities and counties, including Sanya, Ledong, Lingshui, Wanning and other nearby areas.
More than 10,000 military, police and firefighting personnel have been dispatched, and over 770,000 types of emergency supplies were allocated to support flood control, disaster relief and road clearance in severely-affected areas.
Public transportation across the province is gradually resuming services. Sanya Phoenix International Airport has reopened, while the three major ports in the provincial capital Haikou are expected to recommence operations on Monday.
