India Puzzled By Statements Regarding Its Oil Purchases From Russia – Foreign Minister

MOSCOW, August 21 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- India is puzzled by the statements regarding its oil purchases from Russia, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said on Thursday, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

Earlier this week, White House Trade Adviser Peter Navarro said that India should act differently and the purchase of oil from Russia allegedly finances the conflict in Ukraine.

"We are a country, where actually the Americans said for the past few years that we must do everything possible to stabilise world energy markets, including buying oil from Russia.

“Incidentally, we also buy oil from America, and that amount is increasing. So, quite honestly, we are very perplexed by the logic of the argument you have given," Jaishankar told a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov following talks in Moscow.

India is not the biggest buyer of Russian oil, the minister said.

"We are not the biggest purchases of Russian oil. This is China. We are not the biggest purchases of Russian LNG, I am not sure, but I think that is the European Union.

“We are not the country that has the biggest trade surge with Russia after 2022," Jaishankar said.
