PUTRAJAYA, Aug 21 (Bernama) – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has proposed that court proceedings for high-profile corruption cases be broadcast live to boost public confidence in the judicial process.
MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said this is because certain quarters have been using social media to manipulate facts revealed in court, resulting in baseless allegations.
“Among the proposals is to allow live streaming of corruption trials so the public can follow the proceedings transparently. If implemented, this would reflect the government’s transparency and allow the people to judge the course of the case for themselves,” he said in a special session with the media here today.
The MACC has also proposed that lock-ups at enforcement agencies nationwide be fitted with closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) technology to enhance transparency and address misconduct issues.
Azam said this was necessary as there had been complaints regarding corruption, non-compliance and weaknesses in monitoring at enforcement agency lock-ups that were still using outdated CCTV systems.
“CCTV is very important to ensure accountability. Many of the existing CCTVs are outdated, standalone units that are not connected to control centres.
“Advanced CCTV systems equipped with AI technology are very much needed now to strengthen monitoring and accountability in lock-ups,” he added.
