Sultan Nazrin, Tuanku Zara Salim Grace Artificial Reef Deployment Programme In Pulau Sembilan

LUMUT, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, and Raja Permaisuri of Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim, today graced the artificial reef deployment and conservation programme at Pulau Sembilan State Park.

Raja Di Hilir of Perak, Raja Iskandar Dzurkarnain Sultan Idris Shah was in attendance, accompanied by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and Perak Fisheries Department director Mohd Ghazali A. Manap.

A total of 12 artificial reefs were deployed by the Fisheries Department to act as barriers against trawl nets at Pulau Rumbia, in the Pulau Sembilan archipelago, during the programme.

Artificial reefs are man-made structures placed on the seabed or in waters to attract marine life, restore marine ecosystems, and support fisheries, as well as tourism activities such as recreational fishing and scuba diving.

In conjunction with the programme, a ghost net cleanup activity was also held as a key conservation initiative organised by the Perak State Parks Corporation, which involved divers from the Royal Malaysian Navy, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, as well as the Nature and Oceanography Advocate Society (NOAS).

Sultan Nazrin and Tuanku Zara also visited the exhibition booths showcasing the collected ghost nets and planted Ambong-Ambong trees to encourage turtle landings at the Pulau Sembilan State Park.
