IPOH, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- The recovery of about RM5 billion in illicit gains from corruption over the past one to two years reflects the efficiency and determination of the MADANI Government in combating graft, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.
He said the achievement demonstrates the government’s firm commitment to anti-corruption efforts despite scepticism and criticism from certain quarters.
“Some people make cynical remarks about governance and our strong anti-corruption drive. Let me share how much we’ve managed to recover in just one to two years — across all agencies, from politicians to ministries, immigration to customs.
“How much? We’ve already seized between RM4 billion and RM5 billion from corrupt activities,” he said when launching the groundbreaking ceremony for the Ipoh Sentral development project here today.
Also present were Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, Transport Minister Anthony Loke and MRCB Land chairman Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini.
Anwar stressed that good governance must remain a core principle in all development projects to ensure efficiency and integrity.
“This includes every aspect - training, sophistication and our capability to master artificial intelligence. I hope the Ipoh Sentral project can serve as a model example,” he said.
He urged all parties, including the Menteri Besar, Ipoh City Council and the relevant ministries, to re-examine the project’s governance mechanisms.
“Even if the plans are already in place, see if they can be further improved. If we succeed, Ipoh Sentral could become one of the best holistic development models for the nation,” he said.
