KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ-MAIWP) today received RM1.06 million in business zakat (tithe) for 2025 from 17 companies.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar said business zakat was the second largest contributor to PPZ-MAIWP’s zakat collections after income zakat, with contributions showing an upward trend each year.
He added that without the commitment of the companies involved, over 34,000 heads of asnaf (eligible tithe recipients) families might not receive their monthly assistance.
“Zakat paid by business entities not only reflects a sense of responsibility in purifying wealth but also contributes to building a prosperous and inclusive society.
“Every ringgit of zakat paid serves as the main catalyst for various assistance programmes managed by MAIWP, including educational scholarships, capital support for small entrepreneurs, and monthly aid for single mothers and senior citizens,” he said at the 2025 Business Zakat Payer Appreciation Ceremony here today.
The event was also attended by MAIWP acting chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Nizam Yahya and PPZ-MAIWP chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Hakim Amir Osman.
Mohd Na’im called on companies to encourage their employees to pay income zakat via salary deductions, enabling them to receive a 100 per cent income tax rebate.
“For companies that achieve 80 per cent participation of Muslim employees in monthly zakat deductions, they are eligible for a wakalah rate of up to 37.5 per cent of the total zakat paid.
“This wakalah mechanism enables companies to distribute part of the zakat collected directly to the asnaf, including their B40 employees,” he said.
Mohd Na’im said that cooperation with various parties, particularly industry players, would continue to be expanded to enhance zakat collection and distribution, maximising benefits for recipients and the wider Federal Territory community.
