SEREMBAN, Aug 11 (Bernama) -- The Negeri Sembilan Fisheries Department will conduct a second sampling of mussels and shellfish in the waters off Port Dickson tomorrow, following the detection of biotoxin readings above the safe limit in the first sample.
Its director, Kasim Tawe, said laboratory test results from the Kuala Lumpur Fisheries Biosecurity Centre last week showed biotoxin readings exceeding 800 parts per billion, rendering the seafood unsafe for consumption as it could cause health problems.
"We will take the second sample tomorrow morning before an official ban can be issued. The laboratory results are expected this Thursday or Friday," he told Bernama here today.
Earlier, the agency had advised fishermen in the waters off Port Dickson not to collect, harvest, or gather shellfish, including mussels, for the time being.
Before that, the Telok Kemang Area Fishermen’s Association claimed to have detected what was believed to be an algal bloom in the waters off Pasir Panjang.
