KOTA BHARU, Aug 8 (Bernama) -- A Form Four student from Kampung Sering, Kedai Lalat, Muhammad Dani Danial Muhd Azeimi, 16, has tapped into the Niaga Anak Digital Kelantan (NADI) platform to market wau sobek, a traditional kite he has been crafting with his father since childhood.
The teenager is continuing a proud family tradition, guided by his father, Muhd Azeimi Mohd Noor, 46, who is affectionately known as “Mie Wau Sering”.
“I had my traditional kites like wau bulan, jala budi, puyuh, kucing and wau merak on display at the NADI entrepreneurship booth during the MADANI Rakyat Programme 2025.
“I also do wau-making demonstrations and sell framed wau as souvenirs to visitors. Some of my dad’s wau have even attracted interest from abroad,” he said when met by Bernama at the Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium grounds here today.
According to him, the kites on display are priced between RM35 and RM2,000, depending on their size, the materials used, and the artistic value of the sobek patterns.
Muhammad Dani Danial said he often accompanied his father to various exhibitions and demonstrations before actively crafting his own wau and joining NADI earlier this year.
“This was my starting point to earn my own income. The materials were simple, coloured paper, bamboo, and glue, but it took creativity and a lot of patience because wau sobek is a delicate and intricate art,” he said.
The third of four siblings added that visitors, including tourists from outside Kelantan, showed great interest in his family’s crafts, especially the pieces made by his brother, Muhammad Faiz Danial, 19, which stand out for their unique designs and artistic value.
Meanwhile, wau art enthusiast Safiuddin Ahmad Saudi, 37, a civil servant from Kota Bharu, said he attended PMR 2025 to see the intricate sobek art on traditional kites for himself.
“I once tried making a wau during a programme in Bachok, and it was really tough. I think people who can craft these delicate and artistic wau sobek are truly lucky, because not everyone has that kind of talent," he said.
The three-day Kelantan PMR 2025, which runs until tomorrow, is led by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) in collaboration with the Implementation Coordination Unit, Prime Minister’s Department (ICU JPM), and supported by various other ministries and government agencies.
The programme offers over 100 services to the public, showcases the latest technology, and presents various initiatives to engage with the community through the comprehensive MADANI Government approach.
