KPJ Kuching Performs First Heart Ablation In Borneo Using PFA Technology

KUCHING, Aug 5 (Bernama) -- KPJ Kuching Specialist Hospital (KPJ Kuching) has achieved a significant medical milestone by successfully performing Borneo’s first heart ablation procedure using PulseSelect™ pulse field ablation (PFA) technology.

According to KPJ Healthcare, this new approach offers higher precision, faster recovery, and reduces impact on surrounding tissues for patients with heart rhythm disorders.

“The new PFA technology works by delivering controlled energy pulses to specific areas of the heart tissue to treat abnormal heart signals,” said KPJ Healthcare in a statement today.

The first procedure was successfully performed on a patient with atrial fibrillation (AFib), a common heart rhythm disorder that can cause irregular heartbeats, fatigue, and increases the risk of stroke if left untreated.

Meanwhile, KPJ Kuching Consultant Cardiologist Dr Koh Keng Tat, who led the procedure, said the technology allows them to target abnormal heart tissue more precisely while minimising damage to surrounding structures.

“For suitable patients, it offers shorter procedure times, fewer complications, and faster recovery, allowing them to return to their daily activities sooner,” he said.
