BAKU (Azerbaijan), Nov 19 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Brazil’s National Telecommunications Agency (ANATEL) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on telecommunications and information and communications technology (ICT).

The MoU exchange, held here in conjunction with the World Telecommunication Development Conference 2025, was witnessed by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

MCMC was represented by its deputy managing director (Regulatory and Corporate), Datuk Zurkarnain Mohd Yasin, while ANATEL was represented by its president, Carlos Manuel Baigorri.

Fahmi said the MoU is important as it enables MCMC to forge cooperation with a network of regulators in South America, paving the way for the exchange of expertise and experience between both sides.

“Different experiences, different situations and that diversity can help us better understand what more we can do to further enhance connectivity, including in our own region,” he said.

Fahmi added that the MoU exchange was historic, following Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s state visit to Malaysia in October, in conjunction with the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits.

Meanwhile, Zurkarnain said this is the first MoU between MCMC and a communications regulatory body in the Americas, and the cooperation will focus on information sharing in the development of legal and regulatory frameworks in response to the constantly evolving technological landscape.

“This MoU is aimed at capacity building and the sharing of information on legal and regulatory frameworks to address emerging issues in an increasingly dynamic industry, particularly on content-related matters.

“When we talk about artificial intelligence and quantum communications, these are constantly evolving areas that require us to share experiences among regulators in this sector,” he said.

Also present were Malaysian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Ahmad Kamrizamil Mohd Riza and Communications Ministry’s Communications Technology Division undersecretary Ahmad Norhad Zahari.
