KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 (Bernama) -- Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said that the issue of urban cleanliness cannot be left entirely to the disposal of local authorities, but rather it requires commitment from other government agencies and all levels of society.
She made this statement following His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia's criticism over the shoddy cleanliness around Jalan Gallagher during a walkabout here recently.
"After the reprimand, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) scrambled to the location to carry out cleaning work and other follow-up actions. However, we cannot rely only on reactive measures.
"I am convinced that the DBKL has specific programmes for cleanliness projects. (But) we cannot neglect any area in ensuring our city remains clean,” she said.
She was speaking after launching the Federal Territories-level 2025 Climate Change and Green Energy Leadership (IKLIM) Project here today.
The media had reported that His Majesty did a surprise 3.2-kilometre walkabout around Jalan Gallagher to inspect the level of urban cleanliness.
His Majesty subsequently reprimanded the city's authorities for shabby maintenance of clogged drains, the presence of garbage on the roadside, and tree branches that were not removed from the pedestrian walkway.
Following the reprimand, DBKL reacted by taking immediate action with a clean sweep of the affected area, including clearing clogged drains, the roadside litter, fallen twigs, and even dealing with the disturbance of wild monkeys in the area.
