GEORGE TOWN, July 1 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is working with the Penang government to promote wider adoption of the MCMC Nexus application among the public as part of efforts to improve internet accessibility.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the app, developed by MCMC, enables the commission to take more proactive measures based on real-time data provided by users.
“So, we don’t need to wait for complaints from users. This allows us to be more proactive in instructing telco companies to resolve issues,” he told reporters after visiting the Multi-Operator Core Network (MOCN) 4G tower in Tanjung Asam, Bayan Lepas, today under the “Where There Are Roads, There Is Internet” programme.
Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari and Bayan Lepas assemblyman Datuk Azrul Mahathir Aziz, who is also Penang Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker.
MCMC Nexus allows users to measure and monitor internet service quality in real time. It also includes an internet speed test feature, with the collected data sent directly to MCMC and service providers for immediate action and network improvements.
Commenting on today’s programme, Fahmi, who is on a two-day working visit to Penang, said the Tanjung Asam MOCN tower is one of five six-directional 4G MOCN towers developed to enhance connectivity, especially in areas with limited coverage, under the “Where There Are Roads, There Is Internet” policy.
The other towers are located in Ikon Tengkolok and Bukit Putus Scout Camp in Negeri Sembilan, Prima Gambang in Pahang, and the Kota Seri Langat Toll Plaza on the West Coast Expressway (WCE) in Banting, Selangor.
“This is the result of collaboration between the industry and MCMC. A network-sharing framework was created to allow all telcos to work together using a single tower, particularly for important but sparsely populated areas.
“These towers can support up to six telcos. This model is ideal for key routes that lack nearby residential settlements,” he said.
He said the MOCN tower development is made possible with support from the state government and local authorities in securing permits, as well as engineering expertise due to the challenging terrain and soil conditions in Tanjung Asam.
