PUTRAJAYA, June 25 (Bernama) -- Four firefighters from the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), known for turning heads during National Day parades, are set to make their international debut in the bodybuilding event at the World Police and Fire Games (WPFG) 2025 in Alabama, United States.
JBPM director-general Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad said the participation reflects the department’s commitment to promoting physical fitness and sportsmanship among its personnel.
“This is our first time taking part in the bodybuilding category. The four were selected from eight finalists in a national-level competition organised by JBPM last year,” he told Bernama after the department’s monthly assembly at its headquarters here today.
He said while the department has no lofty expectations, it hopes the debut will yield at least one medal as a proud beginning.
“We don’t yet know the level of competition from other countries, but we hope to bring home at least one medal to mark our entry into this event,” he said.
Nor Hisham added that a total of 34 JBPM athletes will compete in golf, bowling, darts, badminton, bench press, push-pull, and bodybuilding at the 10-day international meet.
“We hope to surpass our 2023 performance, where we won 49 medals at the WPFG in Winnipeg, Canada. With the spirit of our slogan, ‘From Ordinary to Legendary’, I believe our athletes can achieve even greater success this year.
“This is not just an individual pursuit but a collective effort by the department,” he added.
Meanwhile, JBPM bodybuilding athlete Hasmadi Jusoh, 46, said past experience at both national and international levels has motivated the team to aim high.
“With strict training and disciplined diet routines, we’re confident and hopeful of winning gold for the country and JBPM,” said Hasmadi, who has served in the department for 20 years.
