MOSCOW, June 3 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- Mongolian Prime Minister Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene has resigned following weeks of protests sparked by his family’s lavish displays of wealth, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti quoting a Financial Times report on Tuesday.
Oyun-Erdene lost a vote of confidence in parliament on Tuesday, securing only 44 of the required 64 votes, the newspaper reported. The prime minister left office after weeks of protests sparked by social media posts showcasing his 23-year-old son’s lavish lifestyle, including helicopter rides, designer handbags and a luxury car.
Speaking in parliament, Oyun-Erdene, who has led Mongolia since 2021, pointed to higher export revenues and GDP growth, among recent economic accomplishments, but said he paid insufficient attention to social matters.
Oyun-Erdene’s Mongolian People’s Party (MPP), part of a coalition government with the Democratic Party and the National Labour Party since the 2024 elections, now faces the challenge of forming a new government amid heightened political uncertainty, the newspaper reported.
