MERSING, Sept 7 (Bernama) -- Despite having no prior knowledge in information technology, twin sisters Syahirah Afifah and Syahirah Afiqah Rohaizat, graduates of Bandar Penawar Community College, Kota Tinggi, proved that determination is all it takes to achieve excellence.

The recipients of the Director’s Award for the Certificate in Information Technology admitted that they had to work extra hard, dedicating about three hours daily to revision.

The 21-year-old twins, the fourth and fifth of nine siblings, also turned to YouTube and Google as additional references, besides guidance from their lecturers.

“Our journey was certainly not easy, as we really struggled to understand certain topics. However, we turned the challenges and encouragement from our lecturers into motivation to keep striving for success.

“At the same time, we took the initiative to seek guidance from seniors and also made use of the ChatGPT application to help us understand difficult topics,” Syahirah Afifah told Bernama at the Johor Community College Convocation 2025 held at Mersing Polytechnic today.

Syahirah Afifah and Syahirah Afiqah, from Pasir Gudang, have an eldest brother who is a person with disabilities (PwD). They plan to work after graduation before furthering their studies.

“Our father does maintenance work, while our mother is a housewife. Therefore, we plan to work first to help ease the family’s burden,” Syahirah Afiqah said.

For another pair of twins, Nur Alia Muyassarah and Nur Alia Najiah Mohd Zafizal, 21, graduates from Segamat 2 Community College, success was even sweeter and more meaningful when achieved together.

“We were more motivated because we’ve always been interested in information technology and determined to succeed together. We paid attention in class, took notes diligently, and most importantly, never missed our prayers,” said Nur Alia Muyassarah from Gemas, Negeri Sembilan, who also won the Director’s Award.

Nur Alia Muyassarah and Nur Alia Najiah will be pursuing their diploma studies at Mersing Polytechnic.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Uwais Al-Qarni Muhamad Ismail, 21, did not let cerebral palsy stand in the way of his ambition to become an architect.

The eldest of two siblings completed his Certificate in Architectural Technology at Segamat Community College, driven by strong support from his mother, an assistant accountant, and his father, a lecturer at a public university.

“My parents always remind me that limitations are not barriers, but challenges to keep moving forward,” he said, adding that he also received help and encouragement from friends and lecturers.

His perseverance paid off when he received an offer to pursue a pre-diploma programme at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Segamat.

At the convocation, 615 graduates received their diplomas and certificates. Also present was Johor Education and Information Committee chairman Aznan Tamin.
