Gig Workers Bill 2025 A Gift To All Gig Industry Workers - PM Anwar

30/08/2025 10:31 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has described the Gig Workers Bill 2025, which was passed in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Aug 28), as a gift for the youth and all Malaysians involved in the sector.

He posted on Facebook today that the Bill gave a clearer definition of the gig industry, including recognition, stronger social networks and a clear future.

Anwar said that although certain parties cast aspersions and claimed that the government was slow in tabling the Bill, the fact is that it was implemented thoughtfully, given its impact on the lives of millions of people.

"As such, in conjunction with the National Month, I affirm that the effort of every gig worker is dignified, and all of you have contributed immensely to strengthening the people and the country's economy,” he said.

Through a video clip attached to the post, Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said the Bill represents a victory for gig workers, in line with the spirit of independence, namely freeing them from pressure and addressing their demands, as promised, although the legislative process was complex and time-consuming.

"There were also objections, but I am thankful because we not only addressed the fate of gig workers, e-hailing drivers, food delivery workers and platform digital workers but also tried to resolve several matters raised.

"Certain parties distorted the issue and claimed that it was not beneficial, but trust me, (through the Gig Workers Bill 2025) with social security, leave, Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) contribution and insurance protection, these were never thought of by those who cast aspersions and object.

"(The Gig Workers Bill 2025 is) an assurance of income stability, dignity and recognition and, ultimately, a guarantee of comfort for those involved in this line of work and their families,” he said.

The Prime Minister also expressed his appreciation to Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong and his ministry, as well as the government's partners, who supported and implemented the people's aspirations, especially gig workers.

Bernama reported that the Bill provides specific guidelines to protect gig workers while balancing the interests of digital platform providers.

It also stipulates the establishment of the Malaysian Gig Economy Commission as an independent regulatory body to ensure the effective enforcement of the law.
