MUTS Calls For Stronger Corporate Communications, Media Partnership

KUCHING, Aug 30 (Bernama) -- All agencies and departments under the Sarawak Ministry for Utility and Telecommunication (MUTS) have been urged to bolster their corporate communication functions for more effective and responsive engagement with media partners.

Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said the effort is crucial as the media serves as a strategic partner in helping the people understand the government’s policies, particularly in utilities and telecommunications.

“The media is a vital bridge between the government and the people. Therefore, I urge all agencies to sharpen their corporate communication capabilities to ensure accurate information is conveyed promptly and transparently,” he said when addressing the MUTS Media Night here on Friday.

He also expressed appreciation to media practitioners for their contributions in conveying information about the government’s policies, programmes, and initiatives to Sarawakians, including those living in remote areas.

He said the media also acts as an educator, a conduit between the government and the people, and a source of constructive feedback to enhance services.

Julaihi said that the media play a crucial role in helping to manage public perception and correct misinformation, especially in the ministry’s efforts to ensure full coverage of water, electricity, and telecommunications services across Sarawak by 2030.

He noted that electricity coverage in Sarawak has exceeded 99 per cent, adding that the state government is also aiming to increase domestic gas usage from seven per cent to at least 30 per cent through the implementation of the Sarawak Gas Roadmap, which will create vast job opportunities and produce more industry experts.

“Water supply in rural areas remains at around 71 per cent, and to bridge the gap, the government is implementing water treatment plant upgrades, developing the state water grid system, and rolling out the Sarawak Alternative Water Supply (SAWAS) programme for remote areas.

“All these plans require the support and understanding of the people. The media is a key strategic partner in making them a success,” he added.
