LLRC Urges MPs To Pass Gig Workers Bill 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 (Bernama) -- The Labour Law Reform Coalition (LLRC) has urged Members of Parliament to pass the Gig Workers Bill 2025 during the current sitting, despite ongoing calls from platform providers to delay its implementation.

LLRC vice president Andrew Lo said the bill is crucial to ensuring better protection and a stronger social safety net for gig workers, particularly e-hailing drivers and riders.

“It is clear that they (platform providers) are against mandatory contributions such as the Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) and Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) which are meant to safeguard gig workers.

“E-hailing drivers and riders face the highest risk of commuting accidents, yet platform providers continue to resist mandatory contributions and coverage,” he said in a statement today.

He added that allowing such exemptions creates an unfair competitive advantage over traditional employers, who are already required to make contributions on behalf of their workers

Lo also criticised industry players for what he described as “fear-mongering” by claiming the bill would increase costs and stifle innovation.

“It is disappointing that these mega firms resort to fear tactics and unsubstantiated claims. The digital revolution and gig economy should not exist solely to profit large industry players at the expense of workers and consumers,” he said.

The bill, tabled in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday by the Human Resources Ministry, focuses on four key areas - the official definition of ‘gig worker’, regulations on income and payment rates, dispute resolution mechanisms, and social protection measures.
