KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 31 (Bernama) -- The spirit of helping one another and giving back to the community must continue to be strengthened in building a MADANI nation grounded in human values and integrity, said Bandar Tun Razak member of Parliament Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
The Prime Minister’s wife said efforts to help the needy would be more effective if the public had confidence in charitable organisations, while stressing the importance of transparency in managing public funds.
“Helping others is an essential (value) in life. This is the value we want to instil in our country, to lighten the burden of those in need,” she said at the fund handover ceremony by Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng to several beneficiaries at Hospis Malaysia in Cheras today.
The ceremony saw the handover of donations totalling RM2.1 million to five beneficiaries, namely the Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association, New Era University College, Hospis Malaysia, the National Cancer Council of Malaysia (Makna) and the National Kidney Foundation (NKF).
Dr Wan Azizah also expressed her appreciation to Lim for his commitment to fulfilling his promise to return public contributions to the community, saying it reflected a sense of responsibility and concern in line with the MADANI spirit.
“Thank you very much to Yang Berhormat Lim for choosing to share for the benefit of the people,” she said, urging more charitable organisations to demonstrate good performance to maintain public trust.
Dr Wan Azizah also emphasised the importance of supporting chronic patients, including those battling cancer and kidney disease, and commended Hospis Malaysia for its dedication to providing quality community healthcare. The media had earlier reported that Lim had pledged to channel all public donations received for his defamation case to welfare organisations.
On Sept 29, the Court of Appeal ordered Lim to pay RM75,000 in damages instead of the RM2 million originally awarded to MonSpace (M) Sdn Bhd and its founder Datuk Seri Jessy Lai Cha Suang for defamation.
Meanwhile, Lim said the RM2 million donated today came from public contributions raised to help him, and the amount was collected within just three days.
“With all humility and sincerity, I fulfil my promise to return all the public donations I received to the community,” he said, expressing his gratitude to the donors.
