Floods: Kedah Sees Rise In Evacuees, Perak Records Decline

05/10/2025 06:06 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 5 (Bernama) -- Another temporary relief centre (PPS) was activated in Kedah today, while in Perak, the number of flood evacuees continued to decline as of 4 pm.

In KEDAH, state Civil Defence Force deputy director Major (PA) Muhammad Suhaimi Mohd Zain said the new PPS is at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Langgar, Alor Setar, with the headcount of victims and families still being finalised.

At Dewan Serbaguna Pokok Sena PPS, the number of evacuees increased to 109 from 33 families compared with 100 from 30 families this morning.

“One river is at the alert level, namely Sungai Kedah at Jabatan Lebuhraya, Kota Setar, where the water level stands at 1.84 metres,” he said in a statement.

He said the weather in Kedah has been clear with no rainfall, but the floods were believed to be triggered by water flow from Pokok Sena into Pekan Langgar.

Meanwhile, in PERAK, only one PPS remains in operation in the Larut, Matang and Selama district following the closure of two centres, namely at SK Matang Gelugor and SK Simpang, Taiping at 2 pm and 3 pm respectively.

The State Disaster Management Committee secretariat said the number of evacuees had decreased to 31 people from eight families, compared to 107 people from 33 families earlier in the day.

The victims are residents of Kampung Matang Jambu and Kampung Telok Kertang.

According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department, rain is expected tonight in Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar and Kinta districts.
