ISTANBUL, July 16 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- Syria called on the residents of Suwayda on Wednesday to comply with the curfew imposed since Tuesday, following renewed attacks by "outlaw groups" on the army and internal security forces, violating a ceasefire deal reached in the city, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported, citing local media.
"After a ceasefire agreement was concluded with the notables and elders of Suwayda city on Monday, lawless groups resumed attacking the army and internal security forces within the city. We have previously confirmed the army's right to respond to sources of fire,” the Defence Ministry said in a statement, reported by the Syrian state news agency SANA.
"The army continues to respond to sources of fire inside Suwayda city, while observing the rules of engagement to protect civilians, prevent harm, and ensure a safe return for those who left the city to their homes,” the ministry added.
It recommended that "residents inside the city stay at home and report any remaining lawless groups."
On Monday, Syrian Defence Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra announced a full ceasefire agreement in Suwayda, while army and security forces entered the city centre to establish control. The Syrian authorities imposed a curfew “until further notice to protect lives.”
However, the Syrian Interior Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday evening that clashes were still ongoing in some neighbourhoods of Suwayda city, amid intensified efforts coordinated with the community leaders to regain full control and restore security.
On Monday, more than 30 people were killed and nearly 100 others injured in clashes between armed Bedouin tribal fighters and Druze militias in Suwayda.
Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia in December, ending the Baath Party regime, which had been in power since 1963.
A transitional administration led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa was formed in Syria in January.
