JOHOR BAHRU, July 12 (Bernama) -- Development projects under the Pengerang Municipal Council (MPP) and Kulai Municipal Council (MPKu) are being continuously monitored to ensure efficient, well-organised, and high-impact implementation, said Johor Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor.
Mohd Jafni, who chaired the monitoring meeting for MPP and MPKu to review the current status of development projects in the second quarter of 2025, said one of the key projects under MPP is the construction of the Sungai Lebam Recreation Centre, which is now being expedited and includes the development of a dock, retention pond, and green spaces for the public.
He said that the installation of smart closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems and a mini integrated operations centre under the Johor Selamat plan has reached 60 per cent physical progress, adding that the initiative is expected to benefit 50,000 residents in the Desaru, Punggai, and Sungai Rengit areas, particularly within the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) corridor.
“Upgrading works on the drainage system in flood-prone areas such as Taman Bayu Damai, Jalan Kempas 1, Kampung Jawa, and Penawar Harmoni are also under close observation, including a retention pond project which is now 60 per cent complete. Meanwhile, road and kerb repair work in Desaru has reached 80 per cent completion,” he said in a Facebook post today.
Mohd Jafni said that for MPKu, key ongoing projects include the installation of smart poles (multifunctional street poles), variable message signage, monsoon drain maintenance, and stormwater management, with an average progress rate of between 25 and 70 per cent.
“The MPKu Smart Command Centre is 70 per cent complete and has now entered the second phase, which involves the installation of AI-powered CCTV systems for traffic monitoring, panic buttons, and comprehensive area security,” he said.
At the same time, he said MPKu is actively carrying out drainage and sewer maintenance in over 20 flood-risk zones, installing smart street lights along Lebuh Putra Utama and Persiaran Indahpura 6, as well as undertaking slope repairs, concrete drain upgrades, and retaining wall restoration in several areas, including Kampung Melayu Sedenak and Jalan Sri Putri Utama.
He said the combination of physical infrastructure development and smart technology represents a strategic approach toward realising the aspiration of making Kulai a pioneer city in digital transformation and community well-being, while also reinforcing the Maju Johor mission.
“The successful implementation of these projects would not be possible without efficient management and the teamwork of various agencies, including the local authorities, technical consultants, implementing agencies, as well as constant monitoring,” he added.
