KOTA BHARU, July 10 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is set to reinforce its role as a global leader in Islamic tourism by hosting the Mosque Tourism Roundtable (MTRT) 2025 here from July 13 to 15.

Organised by the Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC) in collaboration with the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim), the conference will bring together over 100 mosque managers and volunteers from across the country to strengthen the role of mosques as inclusive spiritual tourism landmarks.

MTRT 2025 also aims to increase the number of mosque tourism sites nationwide, expand volunteer participation and enhance mosque readiness in welcoming domestic and international visitors, in line with the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign.

ITC acting director-general Nur Alyssa Coraline Yussin said the initiative not only highlights the beauty of mosque architecture and heritage, but also fosters cross-cultural understanding and dispels misconceptions about the role of mosques.

“Mosques should be inclusive spaces that welcome everyone with respect,” she said.

The three-day programme will feature sessions focused on developing the image and management of mosques as Islamic tourism destinations.

Key segments include ‘Jelajah Rohani di Masjid Inspirasi’, ‘Kemas dan Karisma’ and ‘Suara Masjid, Wajah Islam’. Participants will also take part in a technical visit to the Beijing Mosque in Rantau Panjang and Desa Gemalai Baruh Padi Alami in Kampung Lubok Jambu.

MTRT 2025 is expected to conclude with a joint resolution that will serve as the foundation for an action plan to further develop mosque tourism as a unique segment within Malaysia’s tourism industry.

As part of the programme, Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan is scheduled to launch a digital mosque tourism directory called “Echoes from the Domes” on July 14.

The e-directory features comprehensive information on 51 selected mosques nationwide, helping local and international travellers plan meaningful and accessible spiritual journeys.

“Echoes from the Domes is set to expand Malaysia’s cultural footprint in the eyes of the world,” said Nur Alyssa.
