JAKARTA, July 9 (Bernama) -- In a bid to avert flooding amid ongoing downpours, Indonesia has deployed cloud seeding operations to divert rainfall away from Greater Jakarta between July 7 and 11, officials said on Wednesday.

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said there is a potential for moderate to heavy rain across Jakarta, West Java, Banten, and surrounding regions.

“Field observations after the operation showed no rainfall over Jakarta, Bekasi and nearby areas on Tuesday,” BNPB spokesperson Abdul Muhari said in a statement.

On Monday, around 800 kilogrammes of sodium chloride (NaCl) was dispersed over coastal areas of Banten and Lebak, followed by 2,000 kilogrammes on Tuesday over the southern waters of West Java and the northern Java Sea to reduce cloud formation that could trigger rainfall in urban centres.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the threat of extreme weather in Greater Jakarta is expected to ease over the next three days.
