SEPANG, July 9 (Bernama) -- Uruguay’s Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin arrived in Kuala Lumpur Wednesday to attend the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) and related meetings in Kuala Lumpur.
He touched down at the Bunga Raya Complex of Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at 2.45pm.
He will represent Uruguay at the signing of the Instrument of Accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), marking an important step in the country’s efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties with ASEAN and promote peaceful cooperation in the region.
Besides Uruguay, Algeria will also accede to the treaty.
Established in 1976, the TAC promotes key principles such as mutual respect, non-interference and peaceful settlement of disputes.
It was amended in 1987 to allow non-ASEAN countries to join.
The signing ceremony will take place in conjunction with the 58th AMM and related meetings currently underway at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) under Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability”.
