Tze Yong To Undergo Rehab In Qatar For Four Weeks After Successful Knee Op - BAM

08/07/2025 12:41 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 (Bernama) -- National men’s singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong successfully underwent surgery for an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury at a hospital in Doha, Qatar, yesterday.

Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh said the 25-year-old shuttler will now spend four weeks undergoing the rehabilitation process at the Aspetar Hospital in Doha, which is a globally renowned orthopaedic and sports medicine facility.

“So far, what we know is that everything is fine and the (knee) surgery was successfully carried out. I hope Tze Yong will undergo the rehabilitation process diligently,” Kenny told reporters during a training session here today.

Kenny added that the National Sports Institute had recommended Tze Yong undergo surgery and rehabilitation at the Aspetar Hospital, which has treated some world-class athletes, including the likes of French World Cup winner Kylian Mbappé, Brazil’s Neymar and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.

BAM had previously confirmed that Tze Yong sustained an ACL injury following an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan that revealed a tear in his right knee.

The Johor-born shuttler suffered the injury during the first-round match against Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long at the Malaysia Masters 2025 in May, which forced him to retire mid-game.

Meanwhile, Kenny said BAM are prepared to assist professional shuttler Lee Zii Jia following his “strange actions” in sharing several mysterious sketches on social media recently.

“If he needs assistance and support, we are always ready, if possible, to do so as we have the expertise,” he said.

On Saturday, the National Sports Council (NSC) confirmed that Zii Jia, 27, was fine and that there was nothing to worry about despite the shuttler sharing several mysterious sketches on social media.

NSC director-general Jefri Ngadirin said the council, as well as Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh, had contacted Zii Jia's team (Team LZJ) to ascertain why the player is behaving in such a startling manner.

The mysterious posts (apparently of disturbing images including a stitched-up figure holding a blood-stained needle) by Zii Jia have attracted more than 131,000 likes and more than 3,000 comments, thus raising speculation about the meaning behind his sharing, including allegations that the 2024 Paris Olympic bronze medallist may be facing personal or mental health problems or an internal crisis.
