Sabah Establishes Law Reform Advisory Council

KOTA KINABALU, July 31 (Bernama) -- The Sabah government has established the Sabah Law Reform Advisory Council (SLRAC) as part of a broader effort to uphold the rule of law, strengthen governance and promote legal reform in Sabah.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the establishment of SLRAC was an important initiative aimed at modernising and improving the legal framework in Sabah to meet the needs of its people more effectively.

“The state government welcomes the valuable views and recommendations from SLRAC, which are expected to form the basis for meaningful and lasting legal reform in Sabah,” he said in a statement here today.

Earlier, he presented the letters of appointment to the SLRAC chairman, former Chief Justice of Sabah and Sarawak, Tan Sri David Wong Dak Wah, and its members at Menara Kinabalu today.

The SLRAC members are Datuk Daniel Tan Jwee Peng, Dr David Fung Yin Kee, Datuk John Sikayun, Datuk Roger Chin Ken Fong, and Shakinur Ain Karama, while Janice Junie Lim will act as Secretary.

Hajiji said the establishment of the council was also in line with his vision to make Sabah a progressive, inclusive and forward-looking state, where legal development moves in tandem with social and economic progress, while preserving the state's unique heritage.

“SLRAC is an independent advisory body tasked with conducting a comprehensive review of existing state laws and recommending specific reforms to improve the clarity, efficiency, fairness and relevance of the law.

“The council will also ensure that all proposed reforms will adhere to the unique values, customs and socio-cultural realities of Sabah,” he added
