SHAH ALAM, July 25 (Bernama) -- All projects situated along riverbanks and near residential areas in Selangor have been ordered to tighten safety measures to prevent any untoward incidents.
State Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim said that although existing safety measures were deemed adequate, several other factors needed to be taken into account and improved upon.
He was commenting on the tragic drowning of two children in Section 24 here on July 18, clarifying that the incident took place at a Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) construction site, not a flood mitigation project.
“The project falls under SMG and has not officially commenced. During river excavation works, a buffer zone was created, which led to stagnant water accumulating in the area. We have instructed all SMG projects along Sungai Klang, located near residential areas, to install proper fencing and secure the areas.
“We hope this measure will be effective, and we also want to emphasise that safety in river areas must be taken seriously,” he told reporters after launching the Ehsan frozen product range here today.
