IPOH, June 12 (Bernama) -- A male suspect believed to be involved in the fatal stabbing of a man at Kilometre 12, Jalan Trans Perak near Kampung Gajah has been arrested yesterday.
Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the 30-year-old suspect was detained at Perlis Sentral Bus Terminal in Kangar, Perlis, at about 3.45 pm yesterday by a team from the Perak and Perlis Criminal Investigation Departments (CID).
He said police also recovered a knife that the suspect had disposed of in a rubbish bin in Kangar town.
“The suspect met his former girlfriend, aged 25, to discuss relationship issues at about 9 am on Tuesday.
“During the encounter in a padi field area on Jalan Trans Perak, the suspect allegedly threatened and raped the woman in his car,” he said at a press conference after witnessing the Perak Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) chief handover of duties ceremony at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess in Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah today.
Elaborating further, Mohd Alwi said at about 5 am on Wednesday, the suspect dropped off his former girlfriend at her car when her current boyfriend arrived to meet the suspect. The suspect then fled the scene in his car.
He said the boyfriend chased the suspect and managed to ram and block the vehicle until it stopped, after which the suspect attacked and stabbed the victim in the abdomen with a knife.
“The suspect then fled in the victim’s car before abandoning it at Persiaran Batu Gajah Perdana in Batu Gajah.
“With the suspect’s arrest, the murder and rape cases were solved in less than 24 hours. The suspect has been remanded for seven days from today to assist investigations under Section 302 and Section 376 of the Penal Code,” he said.
Yesterday, it was reported that Perak Tengah district police chief Supt Hafezul Helmi Hamzah said a 29-year-old man died from severe stab wounds sustained during a fight with the suspect on Wednesday.
He said the victim was taken to a clinic for treatment before being pronounced dead by a medical officer.
During the ceremony earlier, CCID (Investigation/Legal) deputy chief Supt Mohd Ridzuan Nor Ihsan was appointed acting Perak CID chief, replacing ACP Mohd Fahmi Visuvanathan Abdullah, who will be retiring on June 18.
