KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today exchanged views with Sasakawa Peace Foundation chairman Tan Sri Yohei Sasakawa on various regional and international issues, including the situation in Myanmar, the Israel-Iran conflict and the ongoing humanitarian tragedy in Palestine.

In a Facebook post, Anwar said he began the first day of his official visit to Japan with a meeting with Sasakawa, whom he described as a long-time friend.

He said the meeting also provided an opportunity for them to reflect on a long history of cooperation built over the years, including through the Forum 2000 initiative founded by former Czech president Václav Havel.

According to Anwar, the forum brings together global leaders, scholars and thinkers to discuss issues related to democracy, human rights, peace and the future of global civilisation.

“We also recalled efforts to empower young people in Southeast Asia through various leadership development programmes based on the Asian Renaissance concept, aimed at producing leaders rooted in values, culture and humanity,” he said.

Anwar also expressed appreciation for Sasakawa’s longstanding contributions to humanitarian efforts around the world.

He said peace efforts must continue to be supported by world leaders and the international community amid ongoing conflicts and humanitarian crises in various parts of the world.

“Lasting peace can only be achieved through dialogue, understanding and a shared commitment to upholding justice,” he said.

The Prime Minister arrived in Tokyo yesterday for a three-day visit to Japan until June 10 to strengthen bilateral ties and attend the 31st Nikkei Forum.
