Students At Integrity, Henry Gurney Schools Excel In SPM, Aim To Rebuild Future

KUALA SELANGOR, April 16 (Bernama) -- Determination to realise their ambitions and change their family’s fate were key motivators for young offenders who achieved excellent results in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2025 examination.

Ramli (not his real name), who scored 6A 1B, said his achievement proves that past mistakes do not define the future, and he is now determined to pursue a master’s degree.

The inmate, who is serving his sentence at Kluang Prison, Johor, said the results have reignited his passion to pursue his earlier dream in aerospace engineering, and expressed gratitude to educators at Sekolah Integriti Kluang for their dedication in teaching him and his friends.

“This is the first time I sat for SPM and achieved such good results. When I was outside (before imprisonment), I did not perform this well.

“I hope with this result, I can pursue my ambition of designing aircraft,” he said when met by Bernama after being named the best overall student for SPM 2025 at the excellence awards ceremony for Integrity Schools and Henry Gurney Schools under the Malaysian Prisons Department here today.

Also present at the ceremony was Deputy Commissioner-General of Prisons (Security and Correctional) Rosoman Abu Bakar @ Che Din.

Another award recipient, Jackson (not his real name), said reflecting on past mistakes had made him view education as a way out to change his life and his family’s future after completing his sentence.

The student from Sekolah Henry Gurney Keningau, Sabah, said his achievement will serve as a stepping stone for him to further his studies in education, to help other young people steer clear of trouble and stay on the right path.

“My parents encouraged me to study, and for me, education is the only way out,” he said, having scored 6As in the SPM 2025 examination.

Meanwhile, Rosoman in his speech said 99 students from Integrity Schools and Henry Gurney Schools sat for the SPM examination in 2025, maintaining a 100 per cent eligibility rate for certificates for four consecutive years since 2022.

He said the Prisons Department remains committed to realising the vision of ‘Penjara Selamat, Berdaya Huni dan Menginspirasikan Harapan’ (Safe, Liveable Prisons and Inspiring Hope), emphasising that prison is not just a place to serve a sentence, but also a space for self-improvement, to gain knowledge, and build a more meaningful future.

“Success and opportunities do not come easily. Each student here is a symbol of resilience, discipline, and a strong desire to change for a better future.

“We understand that even while serving sentences, education remains crucial in securing a brighter future when they return to their families and society,” he said.
