Single Mother Pleads Not Guilty To Posting Offensive Communication On Social Media

JOHOR BAHRU, April 7 (Bernama) -- A single mother claimed trial in the Sessions Court here today to two charges of making and transmitting offensive communications related to royal institutions via social media last month.

Nurul Huda Mohd Bajuri, 49, entered her plea before Judge Mohd Azhar Othman after the charges were read out.

She was charged with posting offensive content on TikTok using the account “ratunurutriratubalqis” with the intent to annoy others.

She faces a similar charge for uploading offensive material on Instagram through the account “ratunurutriratubalqis”.

The offences were allegedly committed at an apartment, Sri Larkin B, Jalan Tun Abdul Razak, at about 4 pm on March 27. The charges were framed under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, punishable under Section 233(2) of the same Act.

If convicted, she faces a fine of up to RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both, as well as an additional fine of RM5,000 for each day the offence continues after conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Afdhallan Syafiq Azmi proposed bail at RM15,000 for both charges with two sureties.

However, defence counsel Nurul Hidayah Mohammad Asri from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK) requested a lower bail, citing her client’s financial situation. She told the court that the accused earns RM3,000 a month as a consultant and is the sole provider for her 16-year-old child.

The court set bail at RM8,000 for both charges with one surety, and also ordered her to surrender her passport, report to the nearest police station once a month, and not to interfere with prosecution witnesses pending disposal of the case.

The case has been fixed for mention on May 8 for the appointment of counsel and submission of documents.
