Arthur Joseph Kurup Assumes New Role As NRES Minister

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 16 (Bernama) -- Leveraging extensive experience across ministries and international exposure, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup today assumes the role of Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), further strengthening the MADANI Government Cabinet line-up.

Arthur’s appointment was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the latest Cabinet reshuffle, filling the crucial portfolio related to national resource management and sustainability previously held by Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

At 43, the Pensiangan MP and Sook assemblyman is no stranger to the Cabinet. In addition to his role as Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, he has gained wide-ranging experience in several strategic ministries since 2020.

The son of the late Sabah political figure Tan Sri Joseph Kurup, Arthur brings a blend of technocratic and political expertise.

A graduate in law and international economics from Australia, the Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) president holds both a Bachelor of Laws and a Master of Laws specialising in International Trade from Bond University, Australia, as well as a Master of International Economics and Finance from the University of Queensland.

He also previously served at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in Geneva, focusing on customs tariffs and agricultural subsidies, an invaluable exposure in balancing development and sustainability.

Upon returning to Malaysia, Arthur was involved in corporate finance and cross-border mergers and acquisitions before becoming fully active in politics.
