KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- A meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Kuala Lumpur on the sidelines of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) events is scheduled for 10:00 GMT on Thursday, according to the US State Department schedule.
"6:00 p.m. LOCAL [10:00 GMT] Secretary Rubio meets with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia," the schedule says.
"I confirm: such a meeting is being worked out," Zakharova said in response to RIA Novosti about a Lavrov-Rubio meeting in Kuala Lumpur on ASEAN sidelines.
Lavrov has arrived in Malaysia on a two-day visit, where he will take part in an annual ASEAN foreign ministerial meeting. In Kuala Lumpur, the minister will also have a meeting in the Russia-ASEAN format and participate in the work of the East Asia Summit (EAS) and the ASEAN Regional Forum on Security.
According to Zakharova, Lavrov is also expected to hold a number of bilateral meetings with Asian partners on the sidelines of the ASEAN meetings.
EAS participants include ASEAN dialogue partners, including China, Russia and the United States.
ASEAN was founded in 1967. It unites 10 countries of Southeast Asia - Brunei, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines. In 2025, the ASEAN chairmanship was transferred to Malaysia for a period of one year on a rotating basis.
