KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 (Bernama) -- Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, who is currently on a working visit to Jordan, presented a symbolic check worth US$1,000,000 on behalf of the Malaysian people to two organisations in Jordan to help the people of Gaza receive cancer treatment.

Mohamad shared in his Facebook that the two organsations, Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation (JHCO) and King Hussein Cancer Centre, (KHCC) received US$500,000 each.

He said the contribution was a result of solidarity and concern of the Malaysian people for Gazans through their donations to the Humanitarian Trust Fund for the People of Palestine (AAKRP).

“Malaysia is committed to working with JHCO in efforts to provide humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people, now and in the future."

The minister added that during a meeting with JHCO Secretary-General Dr. Hussein Mohammad Al-Shebli, he was informed that JHCO has been using the King Hussein Bridge, the only land route to Gaza, since the closure of the Rafah border crossing in Egypt on May 7, 2024.

JHCO played a crucial role in managing aid deliveries from various international organisations and donor countries, he stated.

Mohamad said he also made a visit to the KHCC cancer treatment centre and was warmly welcomed by Chair of the Board of Trustees Princess Ghida Talal. Also present were Chief Executive Officer Nisreen Qatamesh and Donation Collection Director Abeer Al-Maghrabi.

KHCC, established in 1997, provides free cancer treatment and world-class research. The centre is currently treating 300 Palestinian cancer patients.

According to Mohamad, JHCO and KHCC greatly appreciated the contributions made by the Malaysian people as a sign of solidarity with the Palestinian people.

"KHCC also hopes to establish cooperation with the National Cancer Society (Malaysia) to strengthen cancer treatment and research efforts in the future," he noted.

Mohamad said that in both meetings held in Jordan, he emphasised Malaysia's commitment to providing humanitarian and health assistance to the Palestinian people, as well as strengthening cooperation with leading institutions in Jordan.

He also expressed hope that this collaboration would continue to bring hope and much-needed assistance to the Palestinian people in Gaza.

Mohamad is in Jordan to attend the High-Level Conference "Call for Action: Urgent Humanitarian Response for Gaza," co-hosted by King Abdullah II of Jordan, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi of Egypt, and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, scheduled for Tuesday, June 11.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or Wisma Putra in its Facebook posting on Tuesday stated Malaysia's collaboration with JHCO which includes the procurement of essential supplies such as food, medical supplies, and other essential needs, leverages Jordan’s proximity to Gaza and its robust infrastructure.

“These supplies are crucial for the survival and well-being of Gazans,” it said.

According to Wisma Putra, the US$500,000 to KHCC aimed to assist in covering the treatment costs for Palestinians.
