23/02/2023 01:54 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 22 (Bernama) -- Petronas today announced it is the new title sponsor for MIE Racing Honda Team ahead of the 2023 International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) Superbike World Championship which is set to begin at Phillip Island, Australia this upcoming weekend.

The agreement with Petronas will enable the team to expand its projects and set some ambitious goals for the season and beyond.

While the Petronas MIE Racing Honda Team will continue to compete in World Superbike with riders such as national racer Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah and Eric Granado of Brazil, this season, it will also see the fielding of a Supersport team for the first time with the formation of the new Petronas MIE MS Racing Honda Team.

In Supersport class, they will count on younger and skilled riders Tarran Mackenzie of England and another local talent Muhamad Adam Norrodin, as they carve their professional path.

Earlier today, all four riders together with MIE Racing owner, Midori Moriwaki and representatives from Petronas unveiled the Honda CBR1000RR-R and Honda CBR600RR which they will compete in Superbike and Supersport classes respectively, during a virtual presentation.

“It is a real source of pride and satisfaction for the MIE Racing Honda Team to be able to announce a multi-year partnership with Petronas and hope to expand our presence in the production-derived championship with our Supersport team together,” said Moriwaki in a statement today.

Petronas Group Strategic Communications senior general manager Datin Anita Azrina Abdul Aziz said Petronas is extremely honoured to team up with Midori and is very excited to embark on this latest project.

“We have worked with Midori in the past and we look forward to a successful partnership with the Petronas MIE Racing Honda Team, as the FIM Superbike World Championship will provide the opportunity to push our advancement of fluid technology in motorsports and to commercially position the Petronas brand,” she said.

Meanwhile, with the arrival of Petronas, MIE Racing is set to focus on wider-ranging, long-term projects as well as the development of an ‘academy programme’ that will see the partners join forces to harness the Superbike and Supersport World Championship as the platforms and catalyst for a Malaysian talent development programme.

This venture also will enable Petronas to exhibit its expertise and conduct product testing and development with the team, which will help amplify the energy company’s premium products for high-performance production superbikes.
