MELAKA, Sept 29 -- The Melaka government will improve on the organising of the Malaysia Kite and Wau Festival 2019 to attract more participation from within and outside the country in future editions of the festival.
State executive councillor for Tourism, Heritage and Culture, Datuk Muhamad Jailani Khamis said one of the initiatives was to raise the festival to international level and offer attractive prizes in various categories such as uniqueness of kite shape and design, and height of kite flight.
He said such efforts would also help make Melaka a hub for kite and wau festivals in the country as it would be an annual affair in the state’s tourism calendar.
"However, the festival this year sees a slight drop in the number of participants.
"We don’t want kite flying to be just a hobby but a competition offering attractive prizes and attracting a bigger participation,” he told reporters, here, today after officiating at the two-day festival which started yesterday.
About 200 local kite flyers and from China featuring a wide variety of wau and kites including those with lights decorated the night sky yesterday.
On another development, Muhamad Jailani said the haze that had hit Melaka for over two weeks did not adversely affect tourism activities and tourist arrivals in the state.
"For example, the Melaka River Cruise continued to operate although initially there were plans to halt it temporarily but because it had been fully booked, we did not want to disappoint the visitors," he added.
