KUALA LUMPUR, March 6 (Bernama) -- Malaysia’s efforts at developing the digital economy agenda received a boost with the participation of 30 officials from 19 ministries and agencies in the Alibaba Business School’s New Economy Workshop (NEW).

The delegation for the four-day event starting from March 4, at the Alibaba Group’s headquarters in Hangzhou, China, was led by International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Darell Leiking.

Also part of the delegation was Deputy Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Minister Sim Tze Tzin and Malaysia Digital Economy Corp chief executive officer, Surina Shukri.

The participating officials were all involved in driving Malaysia’s digital economy agenda and e-commerce policy making.

“The workshop was aimed at empowering participants by increasing knowledge and understanding on the key elements for the development of Malaysia’s digital economy.

“They are expected to become trainers in their ministries and agencies, which in return, enhances the human capital development in the area of the digital economy,” the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation and the Ministry of International Trade and Industry said in a joint statement today.

Speaking at the workshop’s opening ceremony, Darell said ultimately, the well-trained officials would strengthen the joint-ministries efforts at implementing the National e-Commerce Strategic Roadmap, 2016-2020, and towards achieving greater economic growth and societal well-being in Malaysia.

The NEW is the latest example of Alibaba’s ongoing commitment to support Malaysia's economic development.
