JAKARTA, Dec 23 (Bernama) -- At least 20 people were reported killed following a tsunami along the Sunda Strait, believed to have come about as a result of the Anak Krakatau volcano erupting.
Indonesia ’s National Disaster Management Agency Data Information and Public Relations head Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said that Kabupaten, Pandeglang, Lampung Selatan and Serang were the worst hit. "As of 4.30am (West Indonesian Time), 20 deaths were reported, 165 injured , two missing and tens of buildings damaged,” he said in a statement here today.
He said the tsunami occurred at 9.27 pm yesterday (10.27 pm Malaysian time) and that the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency was still studying what actually caused the tsunami. "It could have been due to sudden plate movements following the eruption and the tide was coming in , which would have made the situation even worse,” he said.
Sutopo said the military, police, fire and rescue department and other agencies had been mobilised to handle the situation.
"The road linking Serang to Pandeglang has been cut off due to the tsunami. The death toll is feared will rise," he added.
