Rafizi Ramli Resigns As Economy Minister, Effective June 17

KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli has resigned as Minister of Economy.

Rafizi announced that he has submitted his resignation from the Cabinet to the Prime Minister.

“This resignation will take effect from June 17, 2025. Starting today, I will be on leave, using up my remaining annual leave until June 16, 2025,” he said in a media statement.

Rafizi said that his final duty as Minister of Economy was the completion of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which has been finalised and is awaiting presentation in the upcoming parliamentary session.

He noted that the 13MP was formulated to place strong emphasis on comprehensive education reforms, including several structural reforms involving the Ministry of Education.

“I hope the Cabinet will continue to uphold several bold reforms involving the Ministry of Education as outlined in the 13MP, even though I will no longer be in the Cabinet,” said Rafizi.

He added that he entered politics to promote a new political culture based on accountability and the people’s mandate.

He stated that his recent loss in the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) election means he no longer holds the mandate from the party to translate the people’s agenda, championed by PKR, into government programmes.

“As is the practice in countries that uphold democratic principles, leaders who lose in party elections should make way for those who have won to take their place in government.

“I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude to the leadership and staff of the Ministry of Economy, who have given me their full support throughout my tenure. I have personally witnessed the competence and capabilities of the majority of public servants here, who are able to draft policies and follow through with effective programme frameworks,” he said.
