KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 8 (Bernama) -- Bursa Malaysia ended the morning session lower today as profit-taking activities set in despite Wall Street’s positive close last Friday.
At 12.30 pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) eased 6.72 points, or 0.42 per cent, to 1,609.80 from last Friday’s close of 1,616.52.
The benchmark index, which opened 0.49 points lower at 1,616.03, traded between 1,601.50 and 1,616.49 during the morning session.
On the broader market, decliners beat gainers 666 to 261. A total of 508 counters were unchanged, 1,310 untraded, and 19 suspended.
Turnover reached 2.20 billion units, valued at RM931.71 million.
Malacca Securities Sdn Bhd said in a note today that the FBM KLCI is expected to trade on a firmer note this week. The research firm reckons that selected technology names may stay in focus as they continue to benefit from global trends in generative artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced data processing. It added that the recent correction in real estate investment trusts (REITs) could offer attractive entry opportunities for investors.
Among the heavyweight counters, Maybank eased 12 sen to RM10.06, Public Bank slipped two sen to RM4.37, and CIMB Group dropped four sen to RM7.87. Tenaga Nasional edged down four sen to RM12.60, while IHH Healthcare improved five sen to RM8.45.
On the most active list, ACE Market debutant BMS Holdings slipped four sen to 18 sen, Tanco added two sen to RM1.19, and PUC fell half a sen to two sen. Velesto Energy was flat at 25 sen, and Capital A added 2.5 sen to 40.5 sen.
Top gainers included Nestle, which rose RM2.00 to RM114.00, while Hong Leong Industries advanced 14 sen to RM16.36, and Sunway improved 14 sen to RM5.57. Malaysian Pacific Industries strengthened 12 sen to RM32.02, and United Plantations added 12 sen to RM28.56.
Among the top decliners, Fraser & Neave fell 30 sen to RM34.80, Ajinomoto declined 30 sen to RM13.60, and Kuala Lumpur Kepong slid 20 sen to RM18.98. Chin Teck Plantation eased 20 sen to RM10.78, and PPB Group slipped 18 sen to RM9.98.
On the index board, the FBM Emas Index declined 42.45 points to 11,919.78, the FBM Emas Shariah Index slid 14.30 points to 11,782.75, and the FBMT 100 Index dropped 41.26 points to 11,702.56. The FBM ACE Index fell 48.51 points to 4,767.63, while the FBM 70 Index contracted 25.37 points to 16,697.23.
Sector-wise, the Financial Services Index slid 120.11 points to 18,891.21, the Energy Index gave up 3.45 points to 755.09, and the Plantation Index fell 47.57 points to 8,048.68. The Industrial Products and Services Index edged up 0.46 points to 166.24.
