01/07/2026 05:10 PM

PUTRAJAYA, July 1 (Bernama) -- Three initiatives supported by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) have been named ‘Champion Projects’ at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prizes 2026.

In a statement today, MCMC said that the recognition reflects three main pillars of Malaysia's digital future, namely developing future digital talent, strengthening trusted and adaptive digital governance, and fostering a knowledgeable, resilient and responsible digital society.

The three MCMC initiatives that received the "Champion Project" recognition are the ASEAN 5G Skills Framework and Capacity Development Platform; Human-Centred Digital Governance Through MCMC's Five-Year Plan 2030; and the Sebenarnya.my portal.

"This recognition marks four consecutive years of Malaysian digital initiatives receiving accolades on the WSIS stage, thereby demonstrating the country's continuous capability in developing digital solutions that have a tangible impact on society.

"This achievement follows the recognition of the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) and Stingray II (2025); the Advocacy and Outreach Program for Orang Asli Villages in Negeri Sembilan (2024) and JENDELA (2023)," according to the statement.

ASEAN 5G Skills Framework and Capacity Development Platform, developed by MCMC through consultations with ASEAN member countries, industry stakeholders and regional experts, positions Malaysia as a regional thought leader in the ASEAN's 5G economy.

The framework, which was endorsed at the ASEAN Digital Ministers' Meeting in Hanoi, Vietnam in January, identifies 50 critical job roles, 211 competencies, and 12 priority skill gaps in the 5G ecosystem.

Recognition of Human-Centered Digital Governance Through MCMC's Five-Year Plan 2030 also acknowledges Malaysia's efforts in providing a national communication and multimedia ecosystem ready to face the next generation of digital technology.

Sebenarnya.my portal, the fact-checking and official verification portal of Malaysia developed by MCMC, is recognised for its contribution in combating the spread of false information and expanding access to authentic information.

WSIS Prizes, organised by the International Telecommunication Union as part of the WSIS process supported by the United Nations, are among the most prestigious recognitions in the world.

For the 2026 edition, the competition received a record 1,595 entries from 122 countries and over 2.2 million votes, reflecting the level of competitiveness of the recognition on an international scale.

The ‘Champion Project’ is awarded to the top five initiatives in each category of the WSIS Action Lines, selected through evaluation and a global public vote.
