MELAKA, June 10 (Bernama) -- The direct Pekanbaru-Melaka-Pekanbaru flight route, which commenced operations today, is expected to serve as a catalyst for the growth of the tourism sector and bilateral economic activities between Malaysia and Indonesia through increased visitor arrivals from both countries.
Melaka Tourism Promotion Division (BPP) General Manager Nasrul Ahmad said 515,086 tourist arrivals from Indonesia were recorded in the state last year, with a target of up to 30 per cent growth this year.
"This new flight route is expected to strengthen ties between Melaka and Pekanbaru, while opening up broader opportunities for cooperation in the tourism sector.
“Melaka offers a wide range of tourism products and destinations with the potential to attract more visitors from Indonesia, including those travelling for holidays, shopping and various services, including healthcare,” he said here today.
Nasrul said this after the Wings Air Pekanbaru-Melaka inaugural flight reception ceremony at the Melaka International Airport (LTAM) in Batu Berendam.
He said the inaugural flight operated by Wings Air carried nearly 50 passengers and will operate three times weekly on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
Nasrul said the air route would facilitate the entry of Indonesian tourists into Melaka while providing a direct travel option for Melaka residents travelling to Pekanbaru.
“Previously, many travellers relied on sea transport, but they now have the option of a direct flight that is more convenient and faster,” he said.
He expressed hope that the flight route would help further increase the number of Indonesian tourists visiting Melaka in the future.
Meanwhile, Pekanbaru City Culture and Tourism Agency Head Akmal Khairi said the direct flight, long awaited by the people of Pekanbaru, would make travel to Melaka easier and bring benefits to residents of both destinations.
He said the people of Pekanbaru regard Melaka as one of their preferred destinations for holidays and shopping due to its proximity and accessibility.
Akmal also expressed hope that more Malaysians, particularly those from Melaka, would visit Pekanbaru, which offers a variety of tourist attractions, thereby further strengthening ties between the two destinations.
