KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 (Bernama) -- Firm action will be taken against any parties promoting or conducting online gambling content and betting websites in conjunction with the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will intensify monitoring efforts to curb such activities in the country.
“MCMC will take action, and members of the public who come across any links or content related to online gambling are encouraged to submit their reports for further action,” he told a press conference after a Roundtable Conference on Safe and Responsible Media Reporting of Suicidal Behaviour today.
The session was also attended by Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.
Fahmi said enforcement would not be limited to mobile applications alone, but would also cover gambling websites attempting to exploit the tournament throughout the entire period.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 is set to kick off at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City with the opening match between Mexico and South Africa on June 11, while the final will be held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, United States, on July 19.
