DUNGUN, June 4 (Bernama) -- Nearly one million tourists visited Terengganu during the festive holiday period in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration from May 22 to June 1.
State Tourism, Culture, Environment and Climate Change Committee chairman Datuk Razali Idris said that the number of tourists was based on entry records via the toll plaza in Terengganu on the East Coast Expressway 2 (LPT2), which amounted to 419,183 vehicles during that period.
He said the number of tourists does not include motorcycles and entries through the federal roads from Besut and Kemaman as well as at the Sultan Mahmud Airport in Kuala Nerus.
"Based on current projections, the number of tourists during the Aidiladha holiday season this year is estimated to exceed 943,161 people," he said when met after the launching ceremony of the Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) Programme for the National River Trail at the Terengganu State Level 2026 at Tanjung Sura Lake Park here today.
He said that the presence of visitors has further invigorated the tourism sector in the state and benefitted the local economy.
Additionally, he said that although some of the visitors were locals living in other states, they still spent money, including hotel and homestay bookings as well as meals throughout the holiday period.
He said his team would hold discussions with the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) to obtain the total expenditure of each tourist vacationing in the state.
"Twenty per cent of the total number of tourists are foreign tourists from China, Singapore and Thailand," he said.
Razali also said his team is confident that the target of nine million tourists in Terengganu this year can be achieved, considering that the state has recorded 2.45 million tourists in the first three months of this year.
"In addition to the beauty of the islands, which are the main attractions for tourists who enjoy visiting various nature-based tourism products such as lakes, waterfalls, and rivers that offer interesting views and a peaceful atmosphere for recreational and leisure activities," he added.
