KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 (Bernama) -- Sunway Lagoon today officially launched its refreshed Scream Park experience, offering immersive entertainment that has become a growing global trend.
The revamped attraction introduced a new generation of features that blends Malaysian folklore, cinematic entertainment, and globally recognised storytelling into an integrated guest journey.
Sudden Impact! Entertainment chairman and global creative director Lynton V. Harris said the attraction comprised three distinct experiences, namely Hantu Hunters, Horrorwood Studios and Oz, with each offering a different storytelling journey to cater to a wide audience.
“Scream Park has been here for 18 years, so it was time to revisit it and create something fresh, unlike Nights of Fright (NOF), which is seasonal and intentionally much scarier. Scream Park is designed to be fun. We want guests to jump, laugh, and enjoy the adventure together rather than leave feeling terrified.
“Visitors can seek attractions that go beyond conventional thrills and scares. Themed entertainment operators are turning to storytelling, technology, and cultural narratives to create more engaging experiences,” he told Bernama after the launching event of Scream Park, The (Not-So) Wonderful Wizard of OZ.
Harris said incorporating regional stories was important in ensuring the attraction retained a local identity while introducing international visitors to cultural narratives that had long been part of the region’s collective imagination.
“Sunway Lagoon attracts international tourists, so we wanted to create something that showcases local and regional stories while remaining entertaining and accessible.
“As for the Hantu Hunters, it allowed the audience to explore well-known folklore and ghost stories through immersive storytelling such as Toyol, Langsuir, Orang Minyak and Galah,” he said.
Harris said the refresh was part of the park's continuous efforts to introduce new experiences in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026), noting that he spent nearly a year researching the story as its enduring appeal across generations made it a suitable headline attraction.
“The Wizard of OZ has evolved from a book to a film, then Broadway productions and now newer adaptations such as Wicked, which introduced the story to a younger audience.
“It has become a global storytelling brand that resonates across generations, making it the perfect anchor attraction for this new chapter of Scream Park,” he said, adding that the ultimate goal was to create lasting memories for families and friends.
Meanwhile, Sunway Theme Parks general manager of marketing business Michelle Soong said the concept was carefully designed to ensure accessibility across different age groups, including children and adults, while maintaining an engaging, immersive experience.
“It is not overly scary, but it is still exciting and interactive. We wanted to make sure that families can enjoy the experience together,” she said.
She also said that the attraction’s uniqueness lay in its interactivity and the level of detail invested in its interior design, particularly in bringing the story world to life.
“If you are familiar with the original story, you will notice the amount of detail and creative thought that has gone into the set design and overall experience,” she addded.
The attraction took guests through iconic environments, including a Kansas farmhouse, a cyclone experience, Munchkinland featuring the yellow brick road, Emerald City, the Scary Forest and the Wicked Witch’s domain, through a darker reinterpretation inspired by L. Frank Baum’s original literary work before arriving safely at Glinda’s Castle.
Scream Park operates daily from 10 am to 6 pm, except Tuesdays, with exceptions during school and public holidays.
