JOHOR BAHRU, May 22 (Bernama) -- The state government's initiative to allocate funds for teachers' room improvements has been hailed as a meaningful gift for educators, helping create a more comfortable and conducive working environment.
Teachers have widely expressed their appreciation, saying it not only reflects the state government's concern for their welfare but also aligns with the Ministry of Education's (MOE) efforts to enhance quality learning environments.
The RM5,000 grant, distributed over the past four years, shows that the benefits of the state's economic growth are reaching educators. This, in turn, reflects genuine care for their welfare, recognising teachers as a vital pillar of the nation's education development.
One beneficiary is Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Bandar Baru Uda, which used the grant to upgrade its facilities by transforming a pantry into a relaxed, picnic-themed lounge.
The space, decorated in a modern style, now comes with new tables and chairs, as well as a smart TV, sure to impress anyone who sees it.
The school’s principal, Azliza Mat Lazim, said the assistance not only adds value to the education sector but also serves as a meaningful form of appreciation for the 120 teachers at the school, which has nearly 1,600 students.
She said physical and mental well-being are among the aspects that need constant attention, and a more conducive work environment can help boost teachers' motivation and morale.
"In fact, this teachers' rest area has a huge impact because teachers need time to unwind due to their very packed schedules.
"This assistance enabled us to improve the space, which in turn revitalises their spirit," she told Bernama.
Senior assistant for Administration Mohd Razi Mat Yeeh said the upgraded space not only serves as a place for teachers to rest but can also be used for various programmes, such as farewell parties.
"I am truly happy because we now have a good system in place. For instance, if there's a farewell party, we no longer need to hold it elsewhere as this space saves us extra expenses," he said.
The Teachers' Room Club chairperson, Rohiza Amin, who is a Design and Technology teacher, hopes the state government will continue the assistance, as vital support for MOE's efforts to upgrade school facilities.
SMK Sri Rahmat, located about five kilometres away, has also spruced up its teachers' room with new tables and furniture. Its pantry now comes with amenities, such as a water filter dispenser to keep educators comfortable.
Principal Shakira Irfah Abdullah said every improvement is based on teachers' actual needs and wishes, ensuring the facilities are truly put to good use.
"This is a large school with many buildings. With 118 teachers placed across two teachers' rooms in separate blocks, we distributed the aid where it was most needed, including the Special Education Integration Programme," she said. The school has 1,976 students.
She added that the continued assistance, including this year's allocation, made for a meaningful gift to mark the recent Teachers' Day.
Design and Technology teacher Zainal Zakaria said a cheerful and happy environment goes a long way in motivating educators in the classroom.
"Teachers become more motivated and enthusiastic, helping them feel comfortable and be more productive when preparing teaching materials," he said.
Johor Education and Information Committee chairman Aznan Tamin said the RM5,000 assistance has been channeled consistently to 1,195 schools over four consecutive years, amounting to a total of RM5.975 million.
He said the initiative has transformed teachers' rooms for the better, allowing educators to work in a more comfortable and conducive environment.
