JOHOR BAHRU, May 11 (Bernama) -- His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, graced a commemorative photography session at Tangga Selat, Istana Besar Johor, in conjunction with UMNO’s 80th anniversary celebration today.
According to a post on the Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar Facebook page, His Majesty was accompanied by the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail.
Tangga Selat is recognised as the site where UMNO was founded on May 11, 1946.
Sultan Ibrahim was welcomed by UMNO president and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Johor UMNO liaison chief and Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
The photography session was held to commemorate UMNO’s establishment during the reign of the late Sultan Sir Ibrahim, following the Third Malay Congress led by Datuk Onn Jaafar.
UMNO’s establishment became one of the key chapters in the country’s nationalist struggle, sparking the movement against the Malayan Union and later paving the way towards the independence of the Federation of Malaya in 1957.
