From Amirul Mohd Sajadi
MAKKAH, May 10 (Bernama) -- A retired policeman who began saving with just RM33 some 48 years ago has proven that consistent saving eventually pays off after being selected to perform the haj this year.
Mohd Daud Hamdan, 72, said he began saving with Tabung Haji when he joined the police force in 1978, despite earning a modest salary and having numerous financial commitments.
“I had only just begun working, my salary was not big and I had many commitments, but I thought if I did not start, I would end up with nothing.
“Little by little, month after month, year after year...Alhamdulillah, today Allah has brought me all the way to Makkah,” he said when met here recently.
The Jasin, Melaka native said he registered for haj in 2004 after hearing a Friday sermon while serving in Sabah, which reminded him of the importance of early registration.
“When I heard that sermon, it really struck me. After the prayers, I thought that if I kept delaying, the opportunity might slip further away,” he said.
Mohd Daud said that despite having to wait 22 years, he remained grateful to have finally been chosen as a guest of Allah at an advanced age.
“When I received the offer letter, I could hardly believe it. At 72 years old, I see this as the most meaningful blessing and invitation. We plan, save and wait…but in the end, Allah decides the best time,” he said.
Despite his joy, he could not hide his emotions over the passing of his wife, Maimon Mohamad, who died about four years ago.
The father of four said he is often reminded of his late wife whenever he sees couples performing the pilgrimage together in the Holy Land, as they once dreamed of making the journey together.
“I miss my late wife very much…we were together for over 30 years. Now I am here alone, but in my heart, I feel she is still accompanying me from afar,” he said, adding that he will be performing haj on behalf of his late wife through badal haj.
